Mental Health Matters: Let’s Talk About This Openly

People in your community - your friends, family, co-workers and other community members are struggling with their mental health. Do you know how you can support them … or yourself? In this series we will explore what mental health and mental illness mean and learn skills to help ourselves, the people we care about and our community of southwestern Wisconsin.  (Free)

Monday, May 2, 9, 16 and 23, 6:30 to 8 p.m. by video conference

Sessions – 90 minutes

Facilitated by Roger Reynolds who lives with Civilian PTSD and speaks openly to help people understand themselves and mental health struggles better, and Julie Stephenson who uses therapy and medication to support her mental health and is a community conversation starter interested in normalizing the messiness of being a human being.

These casual, plain talk sessions will be:

Week 1: Mental Health/Mental Illness – What Does It All Mean?

Starting with the range from mental health to mental illness, we will move into a bit about various mental illnesses, plus a little about the brain and please bring your questions and thoughts.

Week 2: Cheese Curds, Pizza and Chocolate: Bringing Mindfulness into Everyday Life

We can be mindful in everyday activities from washing dishes to running a chainsaw, from breathing to smelling popcorn; and while eating cheese curds, pizza or chocolate.  Being mindful in everyday activities can help us learn to use mindfulness for better mental health.

Week 3: Be Kind or Midwest Nice: Compare and Contrast

Where is the balance between being kind to others and kind to you?  How do you balance both?  What about obligations, boundaries, resentment and focusing on the positive?

Week 4: Bringing It All Together for Self & Community Care

Writing, coloring, drawing, other arts, doodling, video journaling and more can all be used for self-awareness, self-reflection, distracting, calming and exploring ideas.
